The Unseen Dangers of Ignoring a Dental Emergency: Dr. Avery Explains

It’s all normal for a moment. All of a sudden, this searing tooth pain leaves you immobile. You hope it will pass, but hours have passed, and the pain doesn’t go away. The majority of people experience this situation and opt to wait it out, most of the time hoping that it will pass naturally.

But dental emergencies don’t usually improve by themselves. If they are left untreated, they can risk your health, as Dr. Avery of Avery Family Dentistry explains.

Dental problems don’t stay confined to the mouth. A mild toothache may be a sign of something serious, like a deep infection or cavity. Untreated dental infections can lead to severe complications, from infection to hospitalization, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The following is what generally occurs when treatment is delayed:

  • Infection spreads deeper into the tooth, gum, or jawbone.
  • Pain worsens as the inflammation increases.
  • The risk of losing a tooth rises, sometimes to the point where removal is the alternative to a simple root canal or filling.
  • Overall health suffers, as bacteria from the mouth can travel to other parts of the body.

Going to an emergency dentist in Waukegan quickly will prevent these issues and keep your overall health intact.

The Health Risks You Might Not See Coming

The majority of people do not appreciate how fast a dental problem can spiral out of control. What begins as a minor cavity or cracked tooth can quickly lead to:

  • Dental abscesses: Pockets of pus due to bacterial infection, which often cause severe pain and inflammation.
  • Systemic infections: In severe cases, infections in the mouth can spread all over the body through the blood supply, even infecting the heart or other organs.
  • Permanent tooth loss: Infected teeth that remain untreated become non-restorable, leading to expensive restorative treatment in the future.

The American Dental Association emphasizes that early treatment is always safer, easier, and more cost-effective than delaying until the condition becomes critical.

How Emergency Dental Care Protects Your Smile

Rapid treatment from the best Waukegan dentist can stop these dangers before they become a lifelong or life-threatening problem. Emergency dentists treat crisis cases like severe toothaches, knocked-out teeth, broken crowns, or heavy bleeding with rapid, effective treatment.

Definitive treatment usually includes:

  • Pain relief in hours, not days.
  • Preserves the natural tooth whenever possible.
  • Less chance for the infection to spread into the body.
  • Rapid healing with fewer complications.

Even if the pain subsides temporarily, the underlying reason behind the pain rarely disappears on its own. Visiting an emergency dentist in Waukegan ensures the right diagnosis and treatment, reducing the risk of severe oral problems in the long run.

When to Get Emergency Dental Treatment

It’s sometimes hard to know whether a dental issue needs emergency dental care. The rule of thumb: if it hurts, swells, or bleeds without an obvious cause, don’t wait. Some common emergencies are:

  • Sudden, severe toothaches
  • Knocked-out teeth
  • Damaged teeth
  • Swelling of gums or face
  • Persistent bleeding
  • Signs of infection, such as fever or pus

On-time oral care saves teeth, prevents complications, and relieves discomfort quickly.

Dental emergencies rarely warn you, but you can control how quickly you respond. If sudden pain, swelling, or bleeding occurs, call Avery Family Dentistry immediately. Our team provides compassionate, effective care when you need it most.

We have been going here for a few years now and it’s a great dental place. Denise is always welcoming and somehow remembers our whole family. Dr Cheska is very friendly and always happy to see us. We went out of network for our insurance and we did go somewhere else but came running back. They take cleaning very serious and we love that. Awesome people and great place to take care of your teeth.

This is the best dentist I've ever been to, and I don't say that lightly. I have trauma/anxiety with going to the dentist, but Dr. Avery is so knowledgeable, gentle, and good at what she does. All of the staff are accommodating and kind. The location is excellent, and the building is very nicely decorated and comforting. I had my first crown done last year, and Dr. Avery was incredibly gentle and patient with me. I have learned so much about oral hygiene since coming here.

Dr. Avery and team are exceptional individuals. Communication is amazing - personal care and touch can be felt from the moment you enter the very inviting waiting room. The break down of their care plan and the time they spend explaining process is outstanding. Thank you for a wonderful experience - I'll be sure to tell others.
